Shoulder Pain Physiotherapy in Singapore
Shoulder pain can make everyday actions — reaching a shelf, fastening a seatbelt, sleeping on your side — frustrating and uncomfortable. At the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation (CARe), our AHPC-registered physiotherapists and occupational therapists assess the cause of your shoulder pain and build a treatment plan around hands-on therapy, progressive exercise and, where appropriate, shockwave therapy.
Shoulder pain physiotherapy at CARe
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, and that mobility comes at a cost — it relies on muscles and tendons working well together, and pain here can quickly affect reaching, lifting, dressing and sleep. At the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation (CARe), our AHPC-registered physiotherapists and occupational therapists take a conservative, movement-based approach to shoulder pain across our physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. We do not perform surgery, injections or imaging.
How we approach shoulder pain
Assessment first
Your therapist will take your history and look at how your shoulder, shoulder blade and upper back move together. Shoulder pain often involves more than the joint itself, so the assessment considers your posture, work demands, sporting activities and sleep position before a plan is agreed with you.
Manual therapy and sports massage
Hands-on techniques and sports massage are used to ease muscle tension around the shoulder, chest and upper back, improve mobility and support more comfortable movement of the arm.
Shockwave therapy
For stubborn tendon-related shoulder pain, your therapist may recommend shockwave therapy, which delivers acoustic waves to the affected tissue to help stimulate the body's natural healing response. It is offered where clinically appropriate, as part of a wider treatment plan.
Other pain-relief modalities
CARe also offers physical agent modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound, TENS, NMES and heat or cold therapy to support pain relief and recovery where suitable.
Personalised exercise and strengthening
A progressive exercise programme is central to shoulder rehabilitation. Your therapist will prescribe exercises to restore movement, build strength and control around the shoulder and shoulder blade, and gradually return you to the activities that matter to you.
Taping and activity modification
Sports and functional taping can provide short-term support, and your therapist will advise on how to adjust aggravating activities — at work, in the gym or at home — while your shoulder settles.
What shoulder pain physiotherapy can help with
Treatment at CARe may help with a range of shoulder presentations, including:
- General shoulder pain and stiffness
- Muscle tension around the shoulder, neck and upper back
- Tendon-related and overuse shoulder pain
- Shoulder pain that disturbs sleep or limits reaching overhead
- Posture and work-related shoulder discomfort
If your shoulder pain follows a fall or significant injury, if the shoulder looks deformed, or if you are unable to move the arm, please seek medical attention promptly before starting therapy.
What to expect at your appointment
Your first session includes a full assessment of your shoulder and a discussion of your symptoms, activities and goals. From there, sessions typically combine hands-on treatment, suitable modalities and a structured exercise programme, with clear explanations at every step.
Home exercises and continuing your programme
Your therapist will give you a home exercise programme to continue your progress between sessions, and will update it as your shoulder improves so the work you do at home keeps pace with your recovery.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for shoulder pain physiotherapy?
No referral is needed — you can book directly with CARe. If a doctor or specialist has referred you, bring any letters or imaging along so your therapist has the full picture from the first appointment.
Should I rest my shoulder completely until the pain goes away?
Complete rest is rarely the best approach for shoulder pain. Most shoulders respond better to guided, gradual movement and loading at the right level. Your therapist will show you what to continue, what to modify and what to pause while your shoulder settles.
How long does shoulder rehabilitation take?
It depends on the nature of the problem, how long you have had it and how your shoulder responds to treatment. Tendon-related pain in particular tends to improve gradually with consistent loading work. Your therapist will give you a realistic indication after your assessment and review it with you as you progress.
