Chronic Pain Physiotherapy in Singapore

Pain that has persisted for months, or kept returning despite earlier treatment, often needs a different approach from a fresh injury. At the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation (CARe), our senior AHPC-registered physiotherapists specialise in chronic pain management, integrating TECAR therapy, dry needling and evidence-based exercise programmes tailored to each patient.

Chronic pain physiotherapy at CARe

Chronic or persistent pain (pain lasting beyond the usual healing time for an injury, or pain that keeps recurring) can affect movement, sleep and daily function in ways that go beyond the original problem. At the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation (CARe), chronic pain management is led by our senior AHPC-registered physiotherapists, part of a clinic team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Care is conservative and rehabilitative, built around understanding your individual pain pattern rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.

How we approach chronic pain

Assessment first

Your senior physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your pain (how long it has lasted, what affects it, and how it impacts your sleep, work and daily activities) alongside a physical assessment of movement, strength and function. This grounds your treatment plan in your specific presentation.

TECAR therapy

TECAR therapy uses controlled energy transfer to the deeper tissues to support circulation and the body's own repair processes, and is often used alongside exercise-based treatment for persistent musculoskeletal pain.

Dry needling

Dry needling targets tight or sensitive muscle tissue that can contribute to persistent pain, used as part of a wider treatment plan rather than as a standalone fix.

Evidence-based exercise programmes

Graded exercise, tailored to your pain pattern and tolerance, is central to chronic pain rehabilitation: building strength, movement confidence and function over time, progressed at a pace your body can adapt to.

Pain-relief modalities where appropriate

Selected physical agent modalities may be used alongside exercise and manual therapy to support pain relief as part of your wider plan.

What chronic pain physiotherapy can help with

Treatment at CARe may help with:

  • Persistent musculoskeletal pain lasting beyond normal healing time
  • Pain that keeps recurring despite earlier treatment
  • Reduced confidence in movement due to ongoing discomfort
  • Pain affecting sleep, work or daily activities

Chronic pain can have many contributing causes. If you have new or worsening pain, unexplained weight loss, fever, or other symptoms alongside your pain, please see a doctor promptly. Your therapist will tell you if your presentation suggests a medical or specialist review is needed.

What to expect at your appointment

Your first session includes a full assessment of your pain history and current function, a discussion of what you would like to achieve, and an agreed treatment plan. If you have imaging results or a specialist letter, bring them along. They are helpful, but not required to start.

Your home programme

You will receive clear guidance on home exercises and pacing strategies so your progress continues between sessions, with your programme reviewed and adjusted at each visit based on how you are responding.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as chronic pain?

Chronic or persistent pain generally refers to pain that lasts longer than the usual healing time for an injury, often around three months or more, or pain that keeps recurring. Your physiotherapist will assess your specific history rather than relying on a strict cut-off.

Is dry needling painful?

Sensations vary between individuals and the area being treated: some people feel a brief ache or twitch. Your physiotherapist will explain what to expect and check in with you throughout, and dry needling is only one part of a broader treatment plan, not used alone.

How long does chronic pain treatment usually take?

This varies widely depending on the individual and how long the pain has been present. Your physiotherapist will discuss a realistic plan and review your progress regularly, adjusting the approach based on how you respond rather than a fixed schedule.
