Post-Surgery Rehabilitation in Singapore

Surgery is one step in your recovery — structured rehabilitation is what restores movement, strength and confidence afterwards. At the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation (CARe), our AHPC-registered physiotherapists and occupational therapists guide your post-surgery rehabilitation in careful stages, always in line with your surgeon's post-operative protocol.

Post-surgery rehabilitation at CARe

Recovery does not end when you leave the operating theatre. After orthopaedic or hand surgery, structured rehabilitation helps restore the movement, strength and confidence you need for daily life, work and sport. At the Centre for Advanced Rehabilitation (CARe), our AHPC-registered physiotherapists and occupational therapists provide post-surgery rehabilitation that follows your surgeon's post-operative protocol at every stage.

How we approach post-surgery rehabilitation

Assessment and your surgeon's protocol

Your first session starts with a review of your surgery, your surgeon's post-operative instructions and any protocol or precautions provided. Your therapist then assesses your current movement, strength and function, and agrees a staged rehabilitation plan with you that respects those guidelines throughout.

Restoring movement

Gentle manual therapy and guided mobility work are used to restore range of motion within the limits your surgeon has set, helping manage stiffness after a period of immobilisation. Sessions progress gradually, and your therapist will explain what each stage is working towards and why.

Managing pain and swelling

Where appropriate, your therapist may use physical agent modalities such as heat or cold therapy, TENS and therapeutic ultrasound to support pain management and settle swelling as you begin to move again.

Rebuilding strength and function

As healing progresses, rehabilitation shifts towards progressive strengthening — including NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) where suitable to help re-activate muscles that have been offloaded — and exercises that rebuild the specific functions you need, whether that is climbing stairs, carrying groceries or returning to sport.

Rehabilitation after hand and upper limb surgery

Hand and wrist procedures need particularly precise aftercare. Our occupational therapists provide dedicated hand therapy, including custom splinting and scar management, working closely with your surgeon's protocol.

What post-surgery rehabilitation can help with

Rehabilitation at CARe may support recovery after a range of procedures, including:

  • Orthopaedic surgery involving joints, tendons or ligaments
  • Hand and wrist surgery, including tendon and nerve repairs
  • Fracture fixation, once cleared for therapy by your surgeon
  • Stiffness and muscle weakness after immobilisation in a cast or splint
  • Rebuilding capacity for work, daily activities and sport after an operation

Important: always follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions. If you notice wound redness or discharge, fever, sudden swelling or new calf pain after surgery, contact your surgical team or seek medical attention promptly.

What to expect at your appointment

Bring your surgical notes, post-operative protocol and any imaging or specialist letters to your first session. Your therapist will assess where you are in your recovery, explain each stage of the plan, and progress your rehabilitation in step with your healing and your surgeon's guidelines.

Your home programme between sessions

Consistent home work is a large part of post-surgical recovery. Your therapist will give you a clear home exercise programme matched to your current stage, and update it as you are cleared to do more.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start rehabilitation after surgery?

Timing depends on your procedure and your surgeon's protocol — some operations call for therapy within days, others after a period of protected healing. Check with your surgeon, and bring their instructions to your first appointment so your therapist can align your plan with them.

Do you work with my surgeon?

Your rehabilitation is planned around your surgeon's post-operative protocol, and with your consent our therapists can provide progress updates to your surgical team. Bring any protocol documents, clinic letters or imaging to your first session.

How long does recovery after surgery take?

Every procedure and every person is different, so we do not put a fixed timeline on recovery. Your therapist will explain the typical stages for your type of surgery, set goals with you, and review progress regularly so you always know where you are in the process.
